Feline polycystic kidney disease is a disease with high prevalence in some feline breeds such as the Persian breed. This disease is characterized by chronic renal failure, appears in animals between three and ten years of age and leads to severe and irreversible kidney failure. Current treatment is only palliative, however genetic testing is commonly available throughout the UK. A simple cheek swab sent to the Langford Genetics laboratory in Bristol can highlight cats that carry the faulty gene that causes this unnecessary disease. Removing cats that carry this gene from any breeding programmes is essential to maintain strong and healthy kittens in the future.
